Sarm Studios Yard Sale

Sarm Studios Yard Sale

sarm

It’s been on the cards for some time, but it is with great sadness and heavy heart that I learned of the redevelopment of Sarm Studios in Basing Street, London, later this year. Trevor Horn has spoken of the possibility for a while now, but it now seems that property redevelopers are finally moving in and turning much of the iconic Blue Building and the world famous Studio One into residential properties. However, it isn’t the end of Sarm’s activities in the area, with Trevor announcing Sarm Music Village, a creative location based in Ladbroke Grove. And two studios will remain on the original site, albeit underground. Read the official press release HERE.

This building, once owned by Chris Blackwell and Island Records, has been at the heart of so many iconic recordings, such as Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and Live Aid’s ‘Band Aid’, as well as most, if not all, of ZTT‘s output, including Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Propaganda, Art of Noise, Roxy Music, Queen, Madonna, Seal, Robbie Williams, Pet Shop Boys, Rihanna and the Rolling Stones. And of course, most of Bob Marley’s material was recorded here. The building still contains Bob’s legendary bath!

All is not lost though as the guys at Audio Ease have been called in to capture impulse responses from all the recording spaces for use, presumably, in their Altiverb 7 plug in. Check out their video

Anyway, the guys at Sarm, headed up by Trevor’s son Aaron and assisted by ZTT manager Ian Peel, are having a yard sale of a lot of gear. Here’s what they had to say…

“We are having a yard sale here at Sarm!

Sunday 18th August, 1pm – 6pm

£5 entry (all proceeds to charity)

Come and purchase some of our old hardware – speakers and general bits and bob’s before the studio renovations begin.

Some of it works, some of it needs repair … But it’s all definitely seen some action.

Cash is king but we will be able to process Card payments next day.

All proceeds will be donated to the Fr.Jim Teeling, Trevor Horn CBE and Jill Sinclair Trust Fund

I spoke to Ian this afternoon and there are currently no lists or prices available but I’m sure there will be a bargain or two and if anything, it will give a chance to many people to say goodbye to the place. I am hoping to be there myself, so look out for me and say hi if you see me :)

Sarm Studios is located at 8-10 Basing Street, London, W11 1ET. The nearest tube station is Ladbroke Grove, or you can go to Notting Hill Park and talk a leisurely stroll to the studio via Portobello Road and it’s famous market :)

It’s also worth noting, if you have material stored at Sarm, that they will be clearing that out too. Anything not claimed by its owners will be destroyed after August 16th. Contact reception@spz.com for further details.
