Last week, Patrick, the creator of the now famous Fairlight XXL ReFill, uploaded this picture to his site. It perfectly illustrates the immense depth and number of instruments contained in this sound library. Click on the image below for a full size version and unless you have a giant monitor with huge resolution, you’re gonna have to do some scrolling 😉
It’s worth remembering that Patrick has been working on this ReFill series for a good couple of years now. He’s constantly revising it, adding to it and trying to make it as accessible to as many people as possible, including kicking off a crowd-sourced Kontakt conversion.
This is, primarily, a Reason/Record sound library, as within this environment, Patrick and other collaborators have come up with some amazing patches using Reason’s legendary sound production modules.
And when you hold it up to other libraries of similar size and substance, it more than holds its own weight and often outdoes libraries produced by seemingly more professional outfits. The current XXL version includes not only all the Fairlight stuff, but all the classic 80’s synth samples and patches from such sonic legends as the DX1 and DX7, the D-50 and Juno-6. It is entirely possible to create a myriad songs using just this ReFill alone. As far as I’m concerned, it’s my “go to” ReFill, the one that not only sparks my creativity, but also maintains and supports it. There’s a lot of love out there for this library and the man behind it. If you haven’t already, I wholeheartedly encourage you to share that love 😉
