Baby speaks her first words….

Recently, Peter Vogel posted a few sounds from the new Fairlight CMI 30A and I thought I’d share these with you, along with Peter’s explanation. Enjoy the first emanations from his new baby.

Fairlight CMI 30A

The new CMI-30A has spoken its first words, some of which I have captured and would like to share with you.

The CMI-30A will ship with the complete Series II and Series III sound libraries.

However, as well as all the original CMI’s sound crafting capabilities, we’ve been experimenting with some exciting new options.

One of these is the ability to ‘brew’ two or more sounds together, such that they take on each other’s flavours. Technically, this is an extension of convolution, which is a method for creating reverberation or ambience.

Pause now to get out some decent headphones, or plug in some studio monitors. Don’t proceed without them!

The result is quite different from layering or mixing sounds. Here is an example of two Series III sounds mixed, an OOH and a Trumpet.

Note that these sounds are made by brewing the original CMI sounds (sampled in the 80s) and are presented here dry. Stereo positioning, eq and reverb will make them even more startling!
