Mark Reeder – Five Point One
I’m a sucker for a multi-channel audio release and of late, there has been little to get moist around the gusset about. 5.1 music seems to have faded away, whimpering into the cemetery of audio fads along with quadraphonic sound and the like. This is a big shame. A really BIG shame. multi-channel music can be, when done properly, a mind blowing experience and would’ve taken off properly had it not been for some crucial decisions of the terrible kind. For example, Sony dropped SACD support from the Playstation 3 and certain labels abandoned remixing their catalogues due to cost barriers. Some gems do exist out there, such as Björk’s entire catalogue being re-released in 5.1 as a box set called Surrounded. Sadly, her new album, Biophilia will not be mixed in 5.1. Depeche Mode also re-released their back catalogue as remastered stereo and 5.1 mixes and continued the trend with their last studio offering, Sounds of the Universe. And there are various other 5.1 offerings out there of note, such as Queen’s A Night at the Opera & The Game, or Love by the Beatles. And there are numerous versions of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, the best being a bootleg DVD-A version lifted directly from Alan Parson’s Quadraphonic masters. ‘Tis a thing of beauty, I tells ya!
But sadly, the rest of the world didn’t seem to care, and I’ve debated this over the years and no one can give me a concrete reason as to why. Was it cost? Lack of education on the benefits? Lack of material? I guess we’ll never know.
Anyway, when a release in 5.1 occurs, I get excited, more so now they are so few and far between. And when John Cooper from the fabulous Cerysmatic brought this to my attention this afternoon, I got proper excited. It’s a remix album by Mark Reeder, featuring Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Bad Lieutenant, John Foxx and many more. It comes in a 2CD/1DVD package including 5.1 and stereo mixes and costs a measly €19 plus shipping!

Unbelievable that there still is no download format for surround audio! I would buy the crap out of that. I occasionally buy SACDs but don’t want to invest too heavily in a dead format. I can’t listen to many surround DVD releases in my studio because there’s no Mac software player for DTS. (WTF?!?)
A few years ago, Fraunhofer IIS announced the MP3Surround format which, from what I can tell, came to very little indeed…

Even Sound on Sound thought it might be the next big thing. This article by Steve Marshall, creator of such Binaural & DTS Surround masterpieces such as Bilocation, is a very interesting read…

I too will pick up SACD discs if they are of particular interest to me, but it seems the most popular delivery method is on regular DVD’s as a Dolby or DTS digital 5.1 track. Nice enough, but hardly the sonic quality of SACD or DVD-A.
be patient, its coming! http://www.dolby.com/professional/technology/mobile/index.html
Interesting! Thanks for the heads up. I know that devices like the Nokia N8 already have Dolby Digital Plus built in.
