Apologies

Well, this is rather embarrassing. Even though I sit here, typing random bollocks, secreted away in my cubby hole in deepest darkest Suffolk, foolishly thinking that a large proportion of people are in anyway bothered about what I write and when I write it but actually knowing that most of my page views are deflected searches from Google by people who think that a Simmons drum kit owned by someone else I blogged about 4 years ago is actually mine and how much would I consider selling it for, despite ALL that, I do feel a commitment to this blog and it’s a commitment I have neglected for too long, my last post being in January.

So, I apologise. If not to any of you readers, to myself, for being pretty fucking shit at this just lately, even though I’ve had some really good stuff to blog about of late.

I recall my primary school headmaster telling me at the age of 10, just as I was due to head off into the scary world of grammar/high school, that I was lazy. It’s true what they say. That shit stays with you a long time. Forever, in fact. Every time I fail to do something, miss a deadline, not reach a goal or target, Mr Eric Bacon’s words ring in my head as clear as the day he spoke them in 1980 in Class 1 of Blofield Primary School. He was an “old school” headmaster. He believed in the cane and he was a racist, religious bigot but he cared about children and their proper education. He was a great sports teacher too. A proper whip cracker. When I broke my finger keeping goal in a football knockabout (yeah, all 4’10” of me!) he told me it was just a bruise. The hospital told me otherwise, but before they did, I carried on and we won the game.

He was the kind of politically incorrect teacher we are SO lacking these days and a man who I would totally let teach my kids. Sadly, he’s passed on a long time now and been replaced by a multitude of line towing health and safety fearing wimps. But that’s a rant for another day.

So, Mr Bacon may well have been right. But I have often questioned the term “lazy”. Is laziness just a lack of desire to do something you don’t want to do or is it just poor prioritisation? Are truly lazy people those that do nothing at all?

Whatever, I am sorry for letting this blog slip a bit. I have probably lost what few committed readers I had. I have been seduced by the more immediate and less in depth world of micro-blogging and social networking, where it is oh so very simple to commentate or critique in a 140 characters instead of spending proper time crafting a detailed, considered and well constructed argument in a proper piece of writing.

So, let’s see how long this stint lasts and no doubt I’ll be repeating this post in a few months time. For now, spring has sprung and maybe I’m waking up too.

    Hi James,

Yes, I certainly do remember Chris. I’m sure we were in the same class at Blofield. I went to TSA for one year before moving to Attleborough and ultimately Stowupland after my parents got divorced.

Mr Bacon was a legend, no doubt. Highly non-PC (a good thing in many ways) and as I said in the original post, passionate about providing children with every opportunity.

Please say hi to Chris for me and I trust you and he are both well 🙂

    Rob.
